TV SHOW
Episode 1: Pokémon, I Choose You!
Pokémon of the Day: Pikachu
Beginning with the Game Boy's intro screen and music come to life, the first
episode of Pokémon sets the stage well. Ash Ketchum, having reached the age of
10, prepares for the start of his Pokémon journey and doesn't know which Pokémon
to take from Professor Oak, Pallet Town's Pokémon expert. Accidentally
oversleeping, Ash misses his chance to choose and ends up stuck with the
adorable-yet-difficult Pikachu.
After leaving
Pallet Town, Pikachu and Ash enrage a flock of Spearow, and the two narrowly
escape with their lives. In their attempt to escape, the mismatched duo meets
Misty and "borrows" her bike to escape the Spearow and get Pikachu to
a Pokémon Center. Thrown off the bike in a storm, Pikachu comes around and
gives his all to defend Ash, cementing their friendship. Before they head off to
Viridian City, Ash sees a mysterious bird Pokémon fly over the rainbow.
Episode 2: Pokémon Emergency!
Pokémon of the Day: Koffing
After a series of Pokémon thefts, Ash is stopped by Officer Jenny of Viridian
City as a possible suspect. Seeing Ash's Pokedex, Jenny rushes Ash and Pikachu
to the Pokémon Center to treat Pikachu. The real thieves are Team Rocket, a
bumbling gang of crooks searching for rare Pokémon, composed of the
rose-wielding James, the exceptionally curvy Jessie, and their talking Pokémon,
Meowth. After calling his mom and talking with Professor Oak, Ash is confronted
by Misty demanding payment for her ruined bicycle.
Team Rocket plans to raid the Pokémon Center in Viridian City and steal all
of the Pokémon. After recovering, Pikachu leads a team of other Pikachus
against Team Rocket and its two Pokémon, Ekans and Koffing. Demolishing the Pokémon
Center in the process, Ash and Misty defeat Team Rocket and head off to Pewter
City through the Viridian forest. On the way, Ash encounters a Caterpie and
prepares to capture it.
Episode 3: Ash Catches a Pokémon
Pokémon of the Day: Caterpie
Ash captures the wild Caterpie all by himself, his second Pokémon. He quickly
discovers, however, that Misty can't stand bugs, regardless of how adorable they
are. Despite her dislike of insects, Caterpie takes a liking to Misty much to
her chagrin. Ash lectures Misty on Pokémon equality, and they end up fighting.
As they spend the night under the stars, Pikachu and Caterpie have a hilarious
conversation sans English, speaking entirely in their Pokémon noises.
The next morning, Ash sends Caterpie out to battle a Pigeotto. Caterpie is
soundly thrashed, and Pikachu defeats the bird. Ash captures the Pigeotto and is
immediately assaulted by Team Rocket. We learn that Pikachu's powers are
stronger than usual, the reason Team Rocket constantly pursues him through the
battle. After Pikachu and Pigeotto fail to defeat the Rocket's Pokémon,
Caterpie proves himself and evolves into Metapod.
Episode 4: Challenge of the Samurai
Pokémon of the Day: Metapod
Following a long recap of the previous three episodes, Ash and crew meet a
Weedle. While trying to capture it, Ash is interrupted by the Samurai, an
eccentric Pokémon trainer. Given no other choice, Ash deploys the stationary
Metapod as a last resort to defeat Pinsir. Unable to defeat Ash's Metapod, the
Samurai deploys his own Metapod resulting in a seemingly endless standoff.
Suddenly, a swarm of Beedrills steals Ash's Metapod and forces the surprised
team to seek shelter in the forest.
In the forest,
they stumble upon a cluster of Kokoon, who evolve into Beedrills right before
their eyes. Chased into the Samurai's cabin, they hide and spend the night and
let things cool down outside. Team Rocket waits outside, however. Using the
rampaging Beedrills to their advantage, Ash and friends dodge Team Rocket and
recover Ash's Metapod who quickly evolves into Butterfree and puts the entire
Beedrill swarm to sleep with its Sleep Powder attack. Finally through the
Viridian Forest, Ash and company head off to Pewter City.
Episode 5: Showdown in Pewter City
Pokémon of the Day: Onix
Our heroes reach Pewter City, a city famous for stone. Outside of the city they
meet Flint, a mysterious rock-seller. Heading to the Pokémon Center, Ash learns
he needs to collect badges from the eight gym leaders to join the Pokémon
League, starting with Brock, the leader of the Pewter City gym. Ash challenges
Brock to a battle and fails, having sent out an ineffectual Pikachu. Forced to
surrender and discouraged, Ash runs into Flint who offers to help Pikachu train
so that he might defeat Brock using a worn-down hydroelectric generator.
Ash can't bring himself to defeat Brock, but Brock awards Ash with the
Boulder Badge. Flint shows up and reveals himself as Brock's father. With his
father's blessing, Brock joins Ash and Misty to follow his dream of becoming a
world-class Pokémon breeder.
Episode 6: Clefairy and the Moon Stone
Pokémon of the Day: Clefairy
Ash and friends hike towards Mt. Moon, a site with many legends surrounding it.
Ash meets the ever-rhyming Seymour, the scientist who tells of the Mt. Moon Pokémon's
plight - Team Rocket has set up lights to search for the fabled Moon Stone but
has disturbed all of the Pokémon's environment. They meet a Clefairy, who leads
them to the Moon Stone and a society of praying Clefairy.
Team Rocket, of course, attacks, and the Clefairy use their powerful
Metronome attack, defeating them. The Moon Stone is damaged in the process, but
the small pieces of the Moon Stone fall to the ground and evolve many of the
Clefairy into Clefable. Ash and friends leave and head off to Cerulean City at a
quickened pace, trying to catch up with Gary.
Episode 7: The Water Flowers of Cerulean City
Pokémon of the Day: Seel
Ash and Brock approach Cerulean City, but Misty tries her hardest to discourage
them from entering. Meanwhile, Jessie and James steal a huge vacuum pump to
capture Pokémon en masse. Approached by another Officer Jenny, Ash and an
aroused Brock are told about the theft and head to the Cerulean City gym to
claim their next badge.
At the gym, Ash
meets the Sensational Sisters, a trio of valley-girl talkin' gym leaders and
synchronized swimmers. Not wanting to battle, the sisters offer the Cascade
Badge to Ash, but Misty interferes and reveals herself as the fourth Sensational
Sister. Accused of being Ash's boyfriend, Misty challenges Ash to defend her
honor. During their heated battle, Team Rocket attacks with its new vacuum toy
and begins sucking up all of the Pokémon. After defeating Team Rocket, the
sisters award Ash with his second badge.
Episode 8: The Path to the Pokémon League
Pokémon of the Day: Sandshrew
Encouraged by his second badge, Ash sets out to defeat as many trainers as
possible. Ash learns about A.J., a Southern-styled, undefeated trainer who's set
up his Pokémon gym. After losing to A.J. Ash enters A.J.'s makeshift gym and
sees the harsh conditions A.J. subjects his Pokémon to, to get them so strong.
Team Rocket looks on, admiring the strength of Ash's Pikachu once again.
While trying to steal Pikachu, they accidentally capture A.J.'s Sandshrew. The
Sandshrew escapes and finds its way back, where it fights Team Rocket's
standard-issue Ekans and Koffing are defeated. A.J. closes his gym and sets out
to collect badges like Ash.
Episode 9: The School of Hard Knocks Pokémon of the Day: Cubone
Still obsessed with getting a new bike, Misty distracts our friends and gets
them lost on their way to Vermillion City. Stopping for a snack, Brock sends
Misty and Ash off to collect firewood. While looking for firewood, Ash and
Pikachu stumble on a Pokémon Tech hazing ritual. Ash challenges the snotty Tech
students and befriends one of the students and sees a picture of the hazers'
leader, a beautiful girl. After some humorous comments from the males of the
group, they head to Pokémon Tech to defend the students' rights.
Team Rocket arrives on the scene and begins reminiscing about the days at Pokémon
Tech before they failed out. Meanwhile, our friends learn about Pokémon Tech
and test the students' skills. Jezelle, the leader of the hazing club,
challenges Misty to show off her Pokémon knowledge and wins. Ash challenges
Jezelle to a match and narrowly escapes defeat when Pikachu manages to win
without using any electric attacks. In the midst of celebration, Ash and friends
are once again assaulted by Team Rocket. Quickly defeated by a barrage of flying
Pokeballs, Team Rocket runs off
Episode 10: Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village
Pokémon of the Day: Bulbasaur
Still lost on the path to Vermillion City, Ash and friends discover and try to
catch an Oddish. A Bulbasaur quickly runs to the Oddish's rescue before Misty
can capture the disabled Pokémon. Ash tries to capture the protective
Bulbasaur, but fails, and the two Pokémon run back into the forest. After
almost dying on one of the show's many rickety bridges, Brock falls into the
river and is separated from the rest of our heroes.
Brock washes up
next to a house in the forest that serves as a resting place for abandoned Pokémon,
where he meets Melanie, a friendly Pokémon that he, of course, immediately
falls in love with. Team Rocket is in the area and seeks the house hidden in the
forest so they can steal all of the Pokémon that rest there, like the bad guys
they are. To do so, they fly in a portable battle stadium with balloons so they
can have the "home team" advantage they so thoroughly lack. They
attempt to suck the Pokémon in with another vacuum, but Pigeotto's gust attack
combines with the suction to blow Team Rocket away once again. After their
battle, Bulbasaur joins Ash on his journey but only after a battle for his
capture. Brock offers to stay and "help" Melanie but is turned down,
much to his embarrassment.
Episode 11: Charmander - The Stray Pokémon
Pokémon of the Day: Charmander
Still lost on the path to Vermillion City, Ash and friends stumble upon a lone
Charmander. Ash tries to catch it, but it resists his many attempts. Through a
conversation with Pikachu, the team discovers that the Charmander is waiting for
its trainer who abandoned him. Sure that the trainer will return, Ash and
company head towards the Pokémon Center as it begins to rain. At the Pokémon
Center, Brock overhears the limey-voiced Damien bragging about abandoning his
Charmander. Suddenly realizing that the rain could kill the fire Pokémon
Charmander, everyone runsout to rescue Charmander from certain death. After a
daring rescue from some Spearow waiting to devour Charmander, Charmander is
rushed to the Pokémon Center for treatment.
The next morning, Charmander has run away to wait for Damien on the rock once
again. Team Rocket, using a hole-drilling machine, rubber suits, and a bubble
gun, tries to capture Pikachu again and almost succeeds, until the interference
of the abandoned Charmander. Remembering the help Ash and friends provided him,
Charmander attacks and deters Team Rocket. Seeing Charmander's strength, Damien
decides he wants the Pokémon back - Charmander decides he'd prefer friendly
trainers that appreciate him and joins Ash's ever-growing collection of Pokémon.
Episode 12: Here Comes the Squirtle Squad
Pokémon of the Day: Squirtle
One of the best episodes shown to date, this episode rounds out Ash's collection
of the starting three Pokémon. A malicious gang of sunglassed Squirtles is
playing pranks on the citizens of the local town. After talking to another
Officer Jenny, Ash and friends learn about the mob of malicious Squirtles, all
abandoned by their trainers and vowing to get revenge on humanity. Jessie,
James, and Meowth once again loom above, plotting to steal Pikachu. Taking a
break for a picnic, they're attacked by the Squirtle Squad and are tied up and
forced to watch their delicious meal be devoured. Meowth convinces the Squirtles
that he's the leader of Team Rocket and enlists their aid in capturing Ash and
his friends.
Hiding out in an area cave, Ash strikes a bargain with the Squirtle Squad for
his release to pick up a Super Potion for the damaged Pikachu. The Squirtle
Squad agrees to Ash's terms, and Ash sets out to buy the Super Potion. Once in
town, Ash has run-ins with Gary and Team Rocket but manages to buy the Super
Potion and get back in time to save Pikachu. Team Rocket returns with a balloon
full of bombs, ready to take revenge on the Squirtle Squad for stealing their
lunch. In the attack, Ash saves the leader of the Squirtle Squad from flaming
death. A forest fire starts during the attack, and the Squirtles quench the
flames and defeat Team Rocket with their combined Water Gun attacks. Having
changed their minds about humans, the Squirtles accept honorary firemen
positions from the happy townspeople. The leader of the Squad, however, has
bigger dreams and removes his sunglasses to join Ash on his quest.
