NOTE: All characters in this story are fictional and have nothing to do with anything/anyone in reality. I originally wrote this story for my creative writing class, so expect the story to be a bit short. I wrote the ending first, it is by far the longest battle that I have written. Please do not copy and say that this is your work. Last of all, enjoy.
The heat was unbearable — everywhere Novar turned he saw past memories burst up in flames, his whole palace was being burnt apart. The mage of darkness was slightly scarred, he didn’t know how to act, somebody had destroyed his armies and his palace. Now that person was after him. Novar ran and tripped over his dark robe, he lifted his sharp chin and saw a child rise out of the flame; the mage quickly gathered up his power and released a dark spell upon the child, but the child deflected the darkness with ease and continued to stride towards him. Now Novar was terrified, he decided to take a chance with the Dark Lace spell. If his life hadn’t been in peril, he would not attempt to cast the spell because it drained most of his energy and would leave him vulnerable for days. “Dark, yield to my power, release your rage and assist me with your ever burning fury. Dark Lace, destroy the child!” Novar chanted as he drew strange incantations in the smoke filled air before him. Dark thread as thick as Novar’s arms encased the child in a pool of darkness, Novar turned around and laughed; but as he turned to look at the pool of dark threads, he saw nothing but a few spots of dark thread here and there. As Novar stared at where the child had been a moment ago, he felt a cold blade pierce through the back of his thin ribs and rip apart his heart. Novar slowly looked down to see a metal blade jutting out of his chest and as he turned to stare into the child’s eyes, the child whispered into the mage’s ear, “Tell your god that Starblaze sent you.” “Huh?” Novar rose out of his bed and pushed his damp pale hair out of his blue eyes. Every night for the past three and a half years, he had the same dream of a child killing him. Novar was tired from the lack of sleep and was going to do something to take care of the troublesome child in his dream. He slowly walked out of his bedroom and into the marble hallway in his palace; even at this time of the night, the walls glistened and lit up the room. There are advantages to being the most powerful mage on the planet, Novar thought as he walked into his study. He quickly wrote a letter and magiked it to make multiple copies of itself. Novar then stamped each and every letter with his seal and teleported them off to the generals of his army. They shall take care of the threat, Novar thought to himself as he slowly walked back to his bedroom and climbed onto his feather soft bed. * * * The next morning the whole world was in turmoil. Every village was in a chaotic mood as members of Novar’s armies came and slaughtered every child in each village. Anyone who tried to retaliate was also inhumanely massacred on the spot. A young woman with hazel eyes and blond hair was telling a story to her son a tale about how Shavara the demon lord had terrorized the world and that a legendary warrior used a mystic staff called the Drak Cutter, to seal the demon lord into his realm, when one of Novar’s armies burst into the town. The woman quickly hid her young child in a horse drawn cart and slapped the horse’s rump, which sent the cart rumbling into a forest as the raiders came into her village. They spared no one who resisted, as the woman ran to her house to protect her children, she was slayed mercilessly. The young child watched the raiders mutilate his mother as tears rolled out of his hazel eyes and down his pale skin. “I shall avenge you,” was all the child said, but as his black shoulder length hair blew in the soft wind, he felt comforted by the thought. As the horse that was dragging the cart got tired, the child jumped off the cart and started searching for food, for he had not eaten anything this past day. He came upon a small patch of dark red berries and had started to chew on them when he heard a small cry of a young bird. The child looked around and spotted a young hawk with short golden feathers and a sharp beak peep hungrily as it stared into the child’s eyes. The child realizing that the hawk needed food fed the hawk some of the berries and glowed with delight as the hawk quickly ate the offered berries. “Hi, my name is Starblaze. What’s your name?” Starblaze asked as he stroked the hawk’s throat. “I Nighthawk,” the hawk projected into Starblaze’s mind bluntly. “Where is your mom?” Starblaze weakly projected into Nighthawk’s mind. “Dead,” was the only word that Nighthawk projected. “My mom was killed by a general of Novar’s army,” Starblaze stated after a moment of unwanted silence. “I go with Starblaze,” Nighthawk projected and trilled happily. “We shall be friends always!” Starblaze replied with a projection of friendship. That night Starblaze and the hawk camped in a small clearing on the forest floor. As Starblaze cleared a patch of dirt for himself to sleep on, he noticed a curved stick on the floor of the forest. He vaguely remembered his dad teaching him about survival in the forest; Starblaze hesitantly picked up the curved stick and realized that he could fashion it into a crude bow. The next day the pair ate a meager breakfast of a handful of red berries and wandered aimlessly until they stumbled upon a hermit’s cave. The cave resembled a pigpen, long rotten food littered the cave, and piles of unclean clothes had been placed messily on every flat surface and the hermit himself looked as if he hadn’t had a bath since Starblaze was born. The hermit’s physical structure didn’t make him look any better, the hermit was slightly taller than Starblaze’s four foot three, his gray hair hung is large clumps all over his body, his face looked like a moose with a squashed nose, and the hermit’s eyes were a muddy gray and looked worn out. As the hermit came out of his cave, he noticed that Starblaze was carrying a stick that resembled a weak bow. This child will get nowhere, the hermit thought to himself and quickly made a decision. “I see that you need help,” the hermit exclaimed as he grabbed Starblaze’s sleeve and pulled the child into his cave. “Sir, I would appreciate any help that you can give me,” Starblaze said as he accepted a bowl of stew from the hermit’s hands. “Okay, I teach you everything I know about fighting and living off of the forest and you take care of the laundry, getting food, cleaning up the cave, doing the dishes, repairing anything that needs to be fixed, and gathering wood for a fire during the winter.” The man stated absently as he counted out all of the responsibilities on his short stubby fingers. “What have I got to lose,” Starblaze thought as he stared around the cluttered cave. The team now had a routine, wake up, eat, learn from the hermit, search for food and firewood, practice attack formations with each other, take care of the other chores, then go back to the cave that they called home and wait for the next day; if they did not follow the instructions taught by the hermit, they were punished. It just happened that on one of the days that Starblaze was cleaning out the fire pit an extraordinary thing happened; he was mumbling about how much easier it would have been without a fireplace that ate wood when a burst of magical fire leaped out of his hands and blazed merrily in the pit. “By the gods!” the hermit cried out, “You have the gift, you must be the chosen one spoken about in the legends. I must teach you how to control that ability of yours, so that you may one day beat the filthy Novar.” So another hour of teaching was put into the harsh routine. Finally after five whole shifts of all of the seasons, the hermit stated bluntly “You have learned all that I can teach you. Since you are the chosen one, the two of you must go to the frozen lands and seek out the legendary Demon Cutter which lies in a cave to the north so that you may slay the evil mage Novar.” The pair were now skilled in all matters, they could easily fend for themselves, live off of the land and Starblaze had even mastered his newfound mage abilities. Now they had a purpose, to find the Demon Cutter and to destroy the mage that destroyed Starblaze’s village. Starblaze and his feathered friend journeyed long and hard, through the deep perils of the marsh bog, around the valley of death, into the ghost forest and right underneath the fire dragon’s lair, often overcoming some of their many fears and making many new friends who helped them by teaching them useful abilities along the way. Four moons had passed by the time Starblaze reached the frozen lands, as he set out north, he noticed the general of the army that killed his mother, about half a mile ahead of him. Since Starblaze did not know where the legendary weapon was, he followed behind the general, taking care not to be noticed. The pickings were scarce, and at times the pair had to go hungry for days on end, but Starblaze kept his goal in mind and never let the other man out of his sight. The nights were not helpful either, Starblaze usually had to dig out a small hole in the frozen lands with a branch for Nighthawk and himself to sleep in. They stumbled upon the mouth of the cave that held the legendary sword by accident a month after they had first journeyed into the frozen land. As the general ran towards the end of the cave, Nighthawk flew ahead of Starblaze into the cave ignoring Starblaze’s cry to wait. Suddenly the whole cave shuddered and as Starblaze cried out in horror, he watched as the cave dropped a huge amount of boulders upon both the bird and the man. Starblaze ran towards the rocks and used his mage abilities to toss the boulders aside. By the time he cleared out a path for the hawk, he realized that the hawk had perished under a huge boulder. “Noooooooooooooo!” Starblaze cried out and started to weep over the shattered body of the hawk. That day Starblaze buried the hawk and put up an arrow as a marker for the hawk’s grave. Now he was more determined than ever to find the sword and to destroy the fiend Novar. Starblaze cautiously went back into the cave, being careful not to trigger any of the traps that had been laid to keep people away from the sword. By the time that he reached the end of the cave and spotted the silver sword stuck in a crevice below a surprisingly warm waterfall, the sun had risen again. The pale light that shone through small openings in the cave made the sword look even more magnificent. Starblaze grabbed the sword and quickly put up a shield to block any boulders or traps from killing him, but there was no trap. As Starblaze stared dumbfound, he noticed that the lights shone in a particular pattern and when he looked at the waterfall, the light displayed that he was the chosen and that the chosen was the only one who could have held the sword, for it would have destroyed anyone else who attempted to wield it. Now the world was ready to strike back at Novar. As Starblaze left the frozen lands, he noticed that the ice was thinning and that plants were starting to grow in lush colors of red and yellow. Starblaze traveled back to the mainland and one night on his way to Novar’s palace, he had a dream. The dream was vivid enough that Starblaze remembered it perfectly well when he woke up the next morning. Starblaze had been running around and playing happily with Nighthawk like they used to do before he had journeyed on the trip, when a bright light appeared and a young woman with dark brown, shoulder length, curly hair rode a black vehicle with two wheels and the name Jaguar 700 written on the slim handle; her vehicle smoothly flew onto the grass below it. Her eyes were slitted and shone merrily as her lips displayed a smile, she was garbed in a tight fitting black jacket which went well with her black slim pants, her black gloves fit snugly upon her soft hands and her boots were made from leather that had been dyed black. “You are now ready, oh one with the wings of light. You must now complete your journey because prophecy tells that the wings of light shall battle with the wings of darkness, and at the end the wings that wins shall either bring doom to the world, or bring peace and prosperity,” the woman stated, and as Starblaze stared she disappeared. So now Starblaze had to go to the palace. As a patrol from one of Novar’s many armies tried to stop him, Starblaze released all of his pent up pain and agony and set all of Novar’s property on fire. Then as the men stared in horror, Starblaze cast a dust spell that turned all of the monsters and evil men in Novar’s armies into dust. * * * Novar was confused as he ran out of his palace. Who had dared to set his palace on fire, and where were all of his demons. As Novar started to sweat he looked around, buildings spontaneously burst into red and white leaping flames. Fire hawks and other legendary birds screeched the song of death. As Novar turned and started to run away from the fires, he noticed Starblaze leap out of the flame towards him with a silverish dragon slayer sword in his hand. Novar ran, the more distance between the horrible Starblaze and himself the better, but Starblaze was much quicker than Novar, with slow but deliberate long strides, Starblaze was closing in on Novar. With a cry of horror and dismay, Novar looked into Starblaze’s eyes, which were now alternating between pitch black and blood red. Novar quickly increased his pace and tripped over his own metal studded boots. As Novar turned back to Starblaze, his own black robes swirled like a serpent with pearl fangs; Novar quickly raised his sharp bony hands and started to chant words of ancient power. “Agawa Sarva, Agawa Sarva, Agawa Ezalban!” With those words, Novar quickly lowered his hands and pointed towards Starblaze; dark, thin and sticky threads of shadow magic quickly spread out of the outstretched fingers and wrapped themselves around the Novar’s foe. Novar turned around, grabbed his face and laughed hysterically as he realized that he had won; but as he turned around to face the darkness encased Starblaze, the shadow tomb burst into a thousand pieces as Starblaze released his magic energy. With that action, Novar realized that his opponent would be tougher than any other normal mage. Novar started casting spell after spell, often overlapping his own words and adding extra spells to increase the already powerful shadow spells; but all of his efforts proved futile as Starblaze deflected every single spell that Novar cast on him with one of his own. With a terrible feeling of doom, Novar realized that he would have to cast the legendary, life risking darkness spell. Without this I won’t have a life, Novar thought ironically as he quickly slit one of his wrists with a curved magic sword that had been hidden within the many folds and pockets of his robe. He started to chant. “Beyond Darkness and the space beyond, I call upon the earth shaking power of the demon shadow god, Shavara. I release thy power within this mortal vessel and ask that thee vanquish the foe before thy and my body, Zelfire Forever Giga Slayer!” With that, Novar Drew a circle with unrecognizable symbols with his blood and watched as thousands of darkness spells spread out of Shavara’s new body. As the world turned to the dark side and Shavara released power beyond Novar’s dreams, Starblaze calmly dropped his weapon and raised his own hands. Novar watched with pleasure as the dark spells were released and Starblaze went down in a horde of Dark Demons. As minutes passed Novar realized that Shavara was slowly becoming unsure of himself; Starblaze’s body had started to pulsate with a light greenish glow that turned to a splendid shade of all the light colors. Thousands of brightly colored arrows split through each and every one of the Demons with deadly accuracy. Novar cried out loud as dark wings pierced the man’s skin, as blood splattered out of his body, Novar realized with horror that Shavara was now in charge of his body and soul. The body transformed into a creature that resembled a human with dark red dragon wings, red cattish eyes and claws that could easily pierce a human’s pathetic skull without any force being exerted. “Come bringer of light, feel the chaos of the Darkness as the world shall be after I dispose of thee!” Shavara the lord of Darkness called out. “Thee shall not take my world and command it as thou pleaseth!” Starblaze called out loud, “Oh mother nature, lend me your power, release the wings of light upon me so that I may let this soul taste the hellfire!” With that, Starblaze’s body changed as well. The body was similar to that of Shavara’s, but it had sharp green wings, white pupiless cat-like eyes, a long tail with a pointed end which was colored as the rest of his body, shades of all that is. The sword, which had also changed its form into the legendary Drak Cutter, floated smoothly into Starblaze’s extended claw. “With this sword, I shall remove the life and hatred from thy body, I shall avenge those that I loved and held dear in my heart,” Starblaze stated in a calm tone as he got into the Kamazaki fighting position, remembering what his teacher had taught him about the life bond with others. “I call upon thee honorable master, to give me strength in the battle to come.” “Bah, calling upon strength will not help thee worthless human, I am a god, I shalt remove thee from my haven,” the demon lord of darkness exclaimed as a sword of dark power appeared in his own claw. “Avara, prepare thee self!” Shavara roared as he rushed at Starblaze in fury. Starblaze calmly deflected Shavara’s blow and flipped backwards, his magnificent wings opened wide and with a flurry of power, launched himself into the dark skies above noticing that Shavara was doing the same. They clashed again with a fury unknown to the world, but neither was stronger than the other, so that meant that they would each have to use trickery and deceit, things that Shavara was a master at for he was the demon lord. Shavara sent a dark ball of fire towards Starblaze and he reflected it. As Starblaze sent one of his own energy balls back towards Shavara, he noticed a twitch in Shavara’s left leg, showing that Shavara was going to move in that direction. Shavara countered with an even larger dark ball, which caused a tremendous explosion that, was heard all around the planet. The demon lord quickly took a step to the left and launched himself at Starblaze, hoping that Starblaze would block the sword, but would not notice the claw that would rip into his gut. Expecting something like that, Starblaze shifted to his own left and charged his claws with electric power. As Shavara’s body flew by and attempted to recover from the charge, Starblaze quickly released the electricity ripping a hole on the thin membrane of Shavara’s wings. Shavara cried out in pain and fury as his wings mended themselves. “Fool, have thee no thought that I am immortal, thee surely must know that I only die from the heart. The human has no knowledge, the light must be pretty weak to send something like you to defeat me!” Shavara exclaimed as he threw his sword at Starblaze. Starblaze was taken by surprise because of what Shavara had said and got struck by the sword on his shoulder, Starblaze ripped the sword out of his arm and howled in agony as the tendons in his shoulder snapped. Starblaze quickly cast a spell of healing and the shoulder healed itself. Starblaze had a plan, as he charged his sword with thousands pulsating of power shields he noticed that Shavara was casting a Great Blaze spell, Starblaze started to charge his own energy within himself so that he could go through with his cunning plan. As Shavara threw balls of fire and shot arrows of fire at Starblaze he started to cast one of his demon horde spells so that he would have assistance in defeating the human. Starblaze spun his Drak Cutter around in a circle and quickly deflected the volley of fireballs. Starblaze then hoped to catch Shavara off guard by charging at the demon. Shavara whose spell had been interrupted cried out as Starblaze pierced the demon lord’s ribcage. Shavara, eyes ablaze, forgot to heal himself and attacked Starblaze. Starblaze quickly slid out of Shavara’s reach and attacked the demon’s left thigh with amazing speed. Starblaze put the Drak Cutter away and switched to using his own claws. As the battle continued, Starblaze’s storage power increased and started to flash golden on the areas of his body that were fully charged. Shavara, thinking that this was just a reflection of the now rising sun, paid no attention to Starblaze’s power. Shavara flew back and started to cast one of his major spells, Starblaze quickly pulled out his weapon and prepared to deflect the spell. “Pathetic human souls, I beseech thee, lend me the power of the darkness in each of thy souls, I command thee, release thy dark!” Great beams of pure darkness shot out of Shavara’s claws and flew at Starblaze. By this time, Starblaze had turned a pure gold shade and realizing that he had the power, he deflected Shavara’s power and flew back. Taking care to put the Drak Cutter away, Starblaze flew backwards and cast a spell that would drain all of the stored up energy out of him. “Light, I beg of thee, please save the earth, heed my call and send the sword of light forth, NOW!” A white staff made out of pure light magic appeared in Starblaze’s grasp and as Shavara watched in horror as the prophecy was completed, Starblaze struck the sword through Shavara’s heart and watched as both Shavara and Novar died in agony. Starblaze gasped as he noticed all of his wounds, blood marks covered all of his body and he saw the angel appear before him. “You have completed your fate,” the angel said in a beautiful voice that echoed in the distance, “Now you must choose whether you want to be a human as you were, or join my kind and live in happiness.” “Actually, I was kind of hoping to remain as the guardian of the earth,” Starblaze stated in a calm and clear voice. “Are you sure?” the angel asked with one of her wonderful smiles. “I am, dearly beloved Alaba” Starblaze responded. A flash of light pierced through the sky as the sun rose completely. Starblaze, Shavara, and Novar had finally left the world in peace. * * * “Look mommy, look, a white bird,” a little girl cried out as villagers ran from their houses to stare at the magnificent white bird that blazed across the earth. Ten years had passed; mankind was slowly recovering from the mage and the demon god’s terror. Villages were being rebuilt, crops were being planted, animals were coming back, people were getting on with their lives and best of all, little kids were playing in the streets again. “The terror is over, or at least that’s what they think!” the dark mage Afiral shouted at his crystal ball as he watched the white bird speed off into the horizon. His dark green robes swirled in fury as he turned and walked out of his scrying room and into the courtyard of his ice kingdom. THE END Hope you liked it.
